Clogged drains are common occurrences for many homeowners. This is because we use our drains extensively, and sometimes items get washed down or dirt, grime and hair accumulate over time that can lead to clogs.

NuvoH2O offers top-rated home water filtration systems and hard water softeners, so you can have water that’s free from harsh chemicals and minerals that can clog your drains with scale buildup. We offer a whole-house water softener, a dishwasher system, and a water heater system. Below, we'll take a look at how to unclog a drain. Browse our products online today!

Try a Plunger

A toilet plunger can be an effective way to unclog a drain. Use a flexible rubber bell or cone-shaped tool with a handle. The use of a plunger will force water into the pipes with force, hopefully unclogging your drain. This method can work to clear your kitchen and bathroom sinks, as well as your tub and shower clogs, too.

The first step is to remove the drain cover. If the drain is clogged with hair, you may be able to remove the clog with a wire hanger. If the drain is clogged with soap scum, you may need to use a plunger. If the drain is clogged with food, you may need to use a plunger or a snake. If the drain is clogged with grease, you may need to use a chemical drain cleaner.

A Coat Hanger Wire or A Hair Clog Remover Tool

Many of our household clogs are caused by built up hair. When you remove the hair, you effectively remove the clot. Straighten out your coat hanger and create a hook with one end. Push the wire down the hole and begin to move it back and forth to see if you can find the clog. Try to remove the clog this way. A hair clog remover tool is a cord with spikes on it that is inserted into the drain. It should effectively snag the hair and bring it up to dispose of.

A Drain Snake or Auger

A drain snake is another tool you can try to remove a stubborn clog. This tool is sold in most hardware stores. The tool consists of a cable that is 25 feet long with a corkscrew on the end. You put this into the drain till you feel the clog attach and then pull out the clog. Simple, but effective.

Call Your Local Plumber

A local plumber has all of the tools and the knowledge to more than handle your stubborn drain clog. Sometimes, the clog is somewhere where you can't reach it easily, especially if it's in pipes beneath your home and a tree has gotten involved. If you can't unclog your drain easily, a call to your local plumber may be in order. This ensures the clog will be fixed and you yourself won't damage any of your piping inadvertently.
